Like any city, Chicago is composed of a complex set of relationships that work in concert to cultivate a unique identity. Connections between neighbors, friends and acquaintances create opportunities whose scope is beyond calculation and influence exceeds territorial boundaries. The climate of globalization creates a duality enabling travel and communication between individuals of diverse backgrounds and can simultaneously thwart interpersonal interactions favoring efficiency over quality of experience. In reaction to the tendency of impersonal experience, some artists have focused their work on rebuilding mutually beneficial relationships that reestablish the intimacy of community.
