Curriculum Vitae, Lise Haller Baggesen
Born in Aarhus, Denmark 1969. Lives and works in Chicago.
Bio
Lise Haller Baggesen (1969) left her native Denmark in 1992 to study painting at the AKI in Enschede and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She received the Prince Bernhard’s Prize in 2000, and the Dutch Royal Award For Modern Painting in 2003.
In 2008 she relocated to Chicago with her family. She completed her MA in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the art Institute in 2013, for which she received a SAIC VCS Fellowship Award. She was a 2015 nominee for The Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Emerging Artist Grant. In 2017 she was a resident at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
In the meantime, her work evolved from a traditional painting practice toward a hybrid, research based, practice including curating, writing and installation work.
Her first book, Mothernism, was co-published by Green Lantern Press and Poor Farm Press in 2014. Since then, the book and installation has travelled extensively in North America and Europe, with the aim to stake out the “Mother-shaped hole in contemporary art discourse.” Venues include The Poor Farm (WI) The Elisabeth Foundation (NY). A.I.R. Gallery (NY) and The Contemporary Austin (TX); it served as “mother-ship” for the academic conference Mapping the Maternal: Art, Ethics and the Anthropcene at the University of Alberta (AB) and also spawned the curatorial suite 3AM Maternal for Vox Populi, Philadelphia (PA) and the international symposium The Mothernists in collaboration with Deirdre Donoghue and m/other voices. The first Mothernists summit took place in Rotterdam in 2015, and the next, titled The Mothernists 2: Who Cares for the 21st Century, took place at Astrid Noacks Atelier and at the Royal Academy for Fine Art in Copenhagen in fall 2017. Mothernism was reviewed in Art21, KQED, Canadian Art, Hyperallergic and ArtForum.
The femi-futurist costume drama HATORADE RETROGRADE debuted at Threewalls (Chicago, IL) in 2016, and was was received with a Critic’s Pick in Artforum. In 2019 its autonomous sequel HATORADE RETROGRADE: The Musical will premier at Southern Exposure in San Francisco. For the musical Lise Haller Baggesen will develop the score, libretto, costumes and scenography in collaboration with avery r young and the SoEx YAB (youth advisory board), to create a Science Fiction Epic based on Science Fact, set in San Francisco anno 2069, where the next generations are battling the adverse effects of climate change and pollution.
Baggesen exhibits internationally, including 6018 North; The Poetry Foundation; and MCA; Chicago (IL); Terrain, Oak Park (IL); The Suburban, Milwaukee (WI); Overgaden (DK);Württembergischem Kunstverein (D); MoMu Antwerpen (B); Théatre de la Ville de Paris (F); Le Confort Moderne, Poitiers and Villa Arson, Nice (F)
Curatorial projects include Mutualisms (for which she and Kirsten Leenaars received a 2010 Propeller Award) and Poor and Needy co- curated with Yvette Brackman for the Great Poor Farm Experiment IIX, Manawa (WI) and Krabbesholm (DK) (2016/17); the publication Poor & Needy: An Exhibition on Art, Migration and Debt (2017)was co-published by Krabbesholm and Poor Farm Press. Her writing has appeared in Bad at Sports, Chicago Artist Writers, and Third Rail Quarterly.
