Boulevard Dreamers, Lise Haller Baggesen and Kirsten Leenaars
The Franklin Opening August 31st, 6-10 pm
Come out and enjoy the staging of staging, the theatre of theatre, the performance of performance and the labor of love, this Labor Day Weekend!
Through a little glamour, a little glitter, and with a little help from their friends, Lise Baggesen and Kirsten Leenaars explore how we are moved by the agency of desire and the magical allure of being in the spotlight.
In a collaborative work created for the Franklin they investigate the ways in which cultural practices and the media stage their subjects and thus form positions for their audiences.
They reflect on how these positions have become so easily understood and use the strategies and tropes of staging, performance and theatre to rethink the role of the artist or curator as host and producer, to relocate the viewer and potentially to bring different audiences together, by creating an artwork that is activated through the physical actions, interaction, and engagement of those occupying the installation – performers and audience alike – for its completion.
The artists transformed the Franklin into a stage set and green room area.
In these spaces, the dialectical situation of labor versus art, the personal versus the political, the individual versus the group, professional versus amateur, portrait versus landscape, figure versus ground, song versus story, are articulated, enacted, staged, and, ultimately, performed. Boulevard Dreamers questions and celebrates the production of self in a society dominated by one spectacle alone: desire.
A variety of performers from different disciplines and neighborhoods throughout Chicago are invited to perform at the opening night.
Performers: Re-birth, Marvin Tate, Najwa Dance Corps, Dan Sullivan, Anni Holm, Dasha Filippova, In the Spirit: Emily Lansana & Zahra Baker, Jim Dorling, Michael & Madeleine, Plainwhite Tom, Dan Sullivan & Edra Soto.
If you can’t make it to the opening the show is up until September 21st.
